Introduction to the Biggest Boba Fan

Hey guys! My name is Akriti but my friends call me Kreets :) My family is from India, although I have grown up in Oklahoma City my entire life. Because of this I have had the opportunity to grow up in two different cultures at the same time: the one at home and the one outside of home. I have loved this experience mainly because it has allowed me to have a different perspective on certain issues and just life in general. My culture is very different than the one in America, yet somehow my parents found a way to adapt and interrelate the two cultures. :)

I usually go with the flow on a lot of things, so here's a lot of random information about me that I put together; enjoy! feel free to comment away on anything you find in common or even if you're the complete opposite of me :p

Random Facts about me:

  • Class: Junior
  • Major: Psychology Pre-Med
  • Minors: Spanish and Medical Humanities
  • Birthday: May 23
  • As you could probably tell from my title, I love boba tea :-)
  • I have one sister who is 6 years older than me, although everyone thinks we're twins...
  • Favorite hobby: painting
  • Favorite color: turquoise, navy blue, rose gold
  • I collect stuffed animals
  • I love meeting new people!
  • I love jewelry like no other, especially rings.
  • I love hugs. A lot.
  • I adore dogs. I've never had a pet, but if I did it would probably be a corgi.
  • I want to run a marathon one day (those take a lot of training and time that I do not have at the moment, but I've always wanted to get to that point).
  • I am the biggest Harry Potter fan you will probably ever meet.
  • I have a stuffed animal BB8 from Star Wars as well as a remote controlled BB8. :-)
  • I usually never sit in complete silence. I'm always playing music.
  • Favorite artists at the moment: The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran
  • I am always eating something. Food is the way to my heart.
  • I. Need. Coffee. Every. Day.
  • I have three onesies.
  • The amount of money I have spend on Starbucks in the past two years is probably as much as my tuition costs. (jk but really...)
  • TV shows I am currently watching/have watched: Friends, HIMYM, White Collar, Suits, Quantico, Prison Break, Big Bang Theory, Arrow, Flash, Grey's Anatomy, Orange Is The New Black, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (I know, I know, it's a lot...)
  • Words that I like to live by: Be you. (it's simple but it means so much)
My sister and I. Who's who?

Just a lil something I painted during camp. Peep my corgi named Sprinkles and the BB8 & elephant night-light in the back.

Organizations I'm involved in at OU:

Here's some of the organizations I'm involved in at this beautiful campus; I just thought I would list some of my favorite things about them!

  • Camp Crimson - I actually never went to camp but still decided to become an SGL, and lemme tell you: it has changed my life for the better in so many ways. I love being able to interact with incoming students and allowing them to express themselves and be heard, but besides that, seeing how selfless everyone is at camp makes me want to be a better person too. Lovely organization with lovely people!

A collage of a few of my favorite pictures from both years of camp.

  • India Student Association (ISA) - I have had the opportunity of being the publicity chair of ISA for two years now and I absolutely love it. I didn't know anyone before I joined ISA but the people in it are so welcoming that I felt at home right away. I have participated in numerous dance performances with my fellow ISA-ers and have loved every moment of them. Hopefully you will all see flyers for our events throughout the year and come enjoy a taste of the Indian culture :)

  • Integrity Council - Such a great organization on campus, but highly misunderstood by many students... We are stigmatized to be the people that are "out to get students," although I can assure you that is definitely not our job! I love that we get to serve on hearings, conduct investigations, and serve as peer educators, because having a mostly student-run council makes things more comfortable for many students.
  • Soonerthon - Oh man. Soonerthon. One of my favorite events in the whole year. I have attended Soonerthon for the past two years that I have been here and have always stayed til the very end. I just love the whole concept of it: Standing for the kids that can't. It's such a strong message and I love that our university puts on events such as these. #FTK.

The amount of money we raised for the Children's Miracle Network in the last two years!
  • President's Community Scholars (PCS) - this was my favorite thing about freshman year. I have made certain connections from PCS that you wouldn't find anywhere else. The friends I made in PCS are those that will last a lifetime.

  1. Wow you've got quite the story here! Being so involved on campus must be lots of fun, and it sounds like you do lots of work that is super rewarding! I absolutely loved going to Camp Crimson, and I hope that I can be an SGL (and maybe even an OG) in the future! I may have to challenge you on your claim of World's Biggest Boba Fan, because I definitely love boba! It seems like you have a really positive and unique outlook, and I can't wait to read more about/from you as the semester goes on!

  2. Oh, this is great, Akriti: I did not even remember about your Spanish minor (meeting people a SECOND time is always more fun!). Maybe you will want to do something Spanish-inspired for your project in this class. Now I am thinking something about Spanish ghost stories somehow combined with Harry Potter...! Do you know the legend of La Llorona...? She is one of the most famous! Wikipedia: La Llorona
And definitely keep me posted on the organizations and events I can publicize in the announcements (yay for ISA!)

  3. Hi Kreets!
That’s awesome that you have a dual perspective on the world. After studying abroad, I was shocked at how different cultures can be. Like you, I love boba tea, meeting new people, and rings! I, too, need coffee everyday. I attended Camp Crimson, too, and my SGL’s were awesome. I’m glad you’re continuing the legacy! Being so involved must take up a lot of your time, but I bet it’s rewarding!

  4. Hi Kreets, what a cool background! You and your sister could totally pass as twins, lol. I think being apart of two cultures is so amazing. I also think its great how involved you are here at OU. I have a friend who participates in many of the same activities, he loves it! I love painting too, although I never have time for it. Its definitely something I wish to incorporate more often. I also am a coffee fan. I actually work at a new coffee shop called StellaNova, you should come check us out! It was great learning about you, and I hope you have a great semester!

  5. Hey Akriti! I think it's so cool that your family is from India. I am half Indian as my mother's family is from India but I was born in Malaysia. What part of India is your family from? I think it's awesome that you are on the Integrity council. I have a few friends on the council, do you happen to know my friend Sam?

  6. Hey Kreets,
I am also a huge Harry Potter fan. Order of the Phoenix is my favorite book and Goblet of Fire is my favorite move! I also love Star Wars, but I have to say R2-D2 is my favorite drone. I think it's awesome that you're so involved on campus. A lot of the events ISA puts on on Campus seem so fun!

  7. Hi Kreets, nice to meet you! I have never tried boba tea before, but I hear it is really good. All of my friends always rave about it so I will have to give it a try soon. Sometimes I am weird about the texture of things! Wow, I am impressed how much you are involved in at the university. That is really awesome. I see you are/were in PCS, I was in PLC my freshman year and absolutely loved it. Also, I like to paint too, but I never really make time for it. I hope you have a great semester!

  8. Akriti,

I love all of those shows that you're watching! Brooklyn 99 is such an exceptional comedy... my roommate and I hardly ever agree about what to watch, but we've decided that it is our unproblematic fave. I'm also glad that you enjoy Camp so much...I was a camper and then an SGL for the following summer and had an amazing experience. There's something about doing zany things with people in the middle of a sweltering summer that bonds you like no other.

  9. Hi Kreets!

Wow! You're involvement on campus is mind boggling! My mom's side of the family all live in India but similarly I grew up Oklahoma. My roommate from freshmen year was an SGL and he loved it! Who also doesn't love Harry Potter and Ed Sheeran! I think Europe is doing something right with them! Looking forward to reading your posts!

  10. Hello Kreets,
wow you are really involved! That's awesome! I loved how you put together a list of random things about yourself. It was very effective and fun to read! I also have a sister that is six years older than me, people don't think we are twins but we definitely look alike. I love that you have watched Grey's Anatomy, that is my all time favorite show. Nothing compares in my opinion. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  11. Hello Akriti! This may be a sort of weird comment to make, but I think you are the first person I have seen who wrote their introduction in bullet point format. I actually really like this! It made it easy to learn things about you. I am also a super big Harry Potter fan. There are so many of us in this class! I am not really surprised. I can't wait to read some of your stuff! You seem like an awesome person.`

  12. Hey Akriti! You're culture seems so important to you and I like that you're so important about sharing and expressing it with the world! I love how you added in random facts about yourself! I wish I had done that it's so creative! You also seem so involved in things that make you so happy! I attended Soonerthon this year and absolutely loved the unity from everyone there! I'm excited to read all of your stories this semester!

  14. Hi Akriti! It's cool that you're involved with so many groups on campus. I've always kind of wanted to get more involved, but I'm so bad at time management that I don't think I could pull it off. It seems like you have a lot of fun with the different on campus organizations you're a part of. I've also spent way too much money at Starbucks over the years, but I guess the caffeine is worth it. I hope you have a great rest of the semester.

  15. Hey Akriti! You sound like such an amazing person and remind me of one of my best friends from high school! You seem like you're very intelligent, down to earth, and are great with people. Also, I love the style of your blog! This background is fantastic! I can't wait to read some of your stories!

  16. Hi Akriti, I think it is awesome that you are Psychology Pre-Med! I am starting med school in the fall and I did microbiology as my main degree but I also got a degree in psychology and I really enjoyed that aspect of education. I definitely think it can only make you a better doctor. All of your interests sound lovely, I can't wait to read your stories!

  17. Hi Akriti!
Wow you are very involved. I think that is awesome, and it's a great way to meet people and support the OU community! By the way, I love Soonerthon too! I like that it supports such a great cause, and I am so glad you enjoy going to it! It is one of my favorite events to attend, and I have made the best memories there. It is so nice to meet you! I really enjoyed reading your intro and learning more about you.

  18. Hey Akriti! I think your blog and your projects are really cool! I read your first portfolio in the Indian Epics class and I thought that it was really well made. I look forward to reading more from you and what you have written for this class!

  19. Hi Akriti! I also love dogs and corgis are so cute! Videos of corgis bouncing around have been how I stayed sane this semester. I am such a Potterhead so I fully understand that obsession. HP was my childhood so it has such a strong connection. I'm a Ravenclaw according to Pottermore, but I think I lean a little towards RavenPuff status.

  21. Hey there, Akriti! I just looked over your introduction on your blog, “Mythical Collections”. I am in the Indian Epics class, so I am excited to be looking over your website! It is so cool to be able to see some different projects than the ones I have been looking at. I really like how you did your “random facts” section. I love that it is straight and to the point!
